Access Control Design and Installation Across Sydney
An access control system manages who can enter a building, floor or room, and when. Instead of a physical key, entry is granted through a credential such as a card, fob, PIN, fingerprint, or smartphone, which is checked against a list of who is allowed in. Abbco Locksmiths designs, installs, and integrates access control door systems for strata, commercial and residential properties across Sydney.
Abbco Locksmiths has operated in Sydney since 1964 and has been family-owned under brothers Stuart and Steve for more than 35 years. Our mobile team covers the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, North Shore, Sutherland Shire and South Sydney from our Botany shop, and access control sits within our wider home security solutions.
Every install starts with an upfront written quote covering hardware, labour and any ongoing software or monitoring costs. No hidden fees, no after-hours surprises.
Access Control Technologies
Access control runs on two things: the credential a person presents, and the hardware that holds or releases the door. We install and service card and fob readers, keypads, biometric readers, intercoms, electric strikes, magnetic locks and cloud-managed systems across Sydney. We match the combination to the door and the building rather than fitting a single default.
Card and fob
Users tap or present a card or key fob to a reader. Quick to issue, quick to cancel when one goes missing, and easy to scale across a building. This is the common starting point for offices and strata.
Keypad and PIN
A code entered on a keypad, with no card to carry or lose. It suits storerooms, gates and back doors, and codes can be changed after staff turnover or shared for one-off access.
Biometric (fingerprint and facial)
Entry tied to a fingerprint or face rather than a credential that can be passed on or copied. It is used where the door needs certainty about who actually opened it.
Intercom and video intercom
Visitors call through to a handset or phone, and the resident or receptionist releases the door. This is standard for apartment blocks, gated entries and reception desks handling deliveries and guests.
Electric strikes and magnetic locks
The hardware that holds or releases the door. Electric strikes suit standard doors and can stay locked or unlocked on power loss, while magnetic locks suit glass and high-traffic doors and release on power loss for safe exit.
Cloud-based and mobile access
Manage doors, users and schedules from a dashboard or phone, across one site or several. Add or remove a person in seconds, set the hours doors stay open, and pull a record of entries. For individual doors, this extends to keyless entry smart locks.
Access Control for Strata, Commercial and Industrial Sites
Access control suits places where the list of who should have access keeps changing, or where one key in the wrong hands creates a real risk.
- Strata and apartment buildings: We cover common-area doors, car park gates and lifts, with visitor and resident management through intercom. Committees issue and cancel fobs as residents move in and out, and keep a record of who entered shared spaces.
- Commercial offices: We set floor-by-floor and room-by-room control, with after-hours restriction and credentials matched to each employee’s role. When someone leaves, we cancel their access from the dashboard rather than chasing down a returned key.
- Retail: We keep staff-only areas, stock rooms and back offices separate from the shop floor, with entries logged for stock and incident reviews.
- Industrial and warehouse: We set zone-restricted access across a large site, so contractors and drivers reach only the areas they need. The hardware stands up to dust, weather and heavy traffic.
- Schools and universities: We control entry points during and after hours, with the ability to lock down or open up quickly and a full record of visitor movement.
Access Control Integrated with CCTV, Alarms and Monitoring
Access control tells a door who to let in. Its real value comes when it is integrated with the rest of your security setup, which is where a full-service provider matters. Our team integrates access control with:
- CCTV Camera Systems: Link a reader to your cameras so every entry is matched with footage, showing who opened the door rather than only the credential used. Useful for car parks, strata and any site with shared access.
- Alarm Systems: A door forced open, a door held open, or an unauthorised attempt triggers an alert rather than going unnoticed.
- Back-to-Base Monitoring: These alerts reach a 24-hour control room that verifies each event and dispatches a response, so a breach is acted on even when no one is on site.
We provide access control, cameras, alarms and monitoring under one accountable provider, and service calls return to the same team that did the original work. Many electronic security companies handle only one part of the system, while we design, install and maintain the whole chain, so there is a single point of accountability.

Access Control Systems FAQs
How much does an access control system cost in Sydney?
Cost depends on the number of doors, the credential type, the lock hardware and whether you want cloud software or monitoring. A single door on a keypad sits at the lower end, while a multi-door building on cards with cloud management and CCTV integration costs more. We provide a written quote after a site walk-through.
What type of access control system does my business need?
For most businesses, a card or fob system on the main entry and sensitive rooms covers it, with biometrics on the few doors that need certainty about who entered. Larger or multi-tenant sites usually want cloud management and camera integration. For multi-tenant and body corporate buildings, our commercial locksmith service handles the wider site: door hardware, master key systems, common area locks and after-hours access.
Do I need a new door to install access control?
In most cases, no. Standard timber, glass and aluminium doors take an electric strike or magnetic lock and a reader without being replaced. We assess each door during the quote, since fire doors, heritage fittings and some sliding doors need specific hardware to stay compliant.
Do I need a locksmith or an electrician to install access control?
Access control sits across both trades, so a locksmith with security training is well placed to handle it. The locking hardware, the door and how it behaves on power loss are locksmithing decisions. We cover the lock side and the electronic side together, so the install runs through one team.
What happens to the doors during a power cut?
It depends on how each door is set up. Magnetic locks are fail-safe, releasing on power loss so people can exit, which is required on most exit doors. Electric strikes can be fail-safe or fail-secure, depending on the door. We design each door to meet egress requirements and back critical doors with battery support.
Do you service the access control systems you install?
Yes. Our team services every system we install, including adding and removing users, reader and lock faults, software updates and battery replacements. Systems from other installers can usually be serviced too, after a site visit to confirm the hardware and software. Service work sits within our wider locksmith and security services across Sydney.
